Sir Jimmy Savile (1926-2011)

Tribute to the late broadcaster

Sir James Wilson Vincent Savile was a DJ, TV presenter and charity fundrasier, who will be best remembered for his role in supporting numerous charities and running in numerous marathon's. Indeed, in 2005 he completed the London Marathon at the age of 79.

Of course, he will also be remembered for presenting Jim'll Fix It, which had a regular Saturday tea-time slot on BBC1 back in the 1970's and 80s. The family show ran from May 1975 until July 1994 and helped hundreds of children (and some adults, too) to make their dreams come true. Those cub scouts eating their lunch on a rollercoaster is one episode that springs to mind! Everyone who featured in the show received a "Jim'll Fix It!" badge, handed out by Jimmy from his "magic chair".

Jimmy also presented the BBC music show Top of the Pops (photo left shows Jimmy on a 1964 edition of the show) and had the honour of hosting the very first and last shows.

But what I really remember about the guy were his catchphrases, shellsuits, giant cigars and bling! Catchphrases included "Now then, now then", "Guys and gals", "How's about that then?", "as it 'appens" and "Goodness, gracious". And who can forget that famous yodel?

A big character and a legend who will be sadly missed.

R.I.P. Sir Jimmy Saville.

The best Jimmy Savile impersonation ever?

This clip is taken from the late night ITV show 'Who Do You Do? It features one of the best impression's of Jimmy Savile by a member of The Grumbleweeds. Close your eyes and it's hard to tell the difference!
