BABYBIRD - "YOU'RE GORGEOUS"

by Mark Nobes, chief editor

You're Gorgeous was Babybird's second hit single in the UK, and their only song to reach the top ten, peaking at No.3 during 1996. In total, the British Indie band achieved success with eight Top 40 hits between 1996 and 2001.

While the song sounds like a very uplifting number, the lyrics are actually about the exploitation of models by photographers. Released on CD single only, three other tracks were included; Bebe Limonade (ft. Olivia Trench), You're Gorgeous Too (alternative version of the 1st track) and Carcrash

The song was also a hit in several European countries and was lifted from the band's debut album Ugly Beautiful, which also featured new versions of frontman Stephen Jones' previous solo work. The album reached #9 in the British album charts and the follow-up album There's Something Going On was also moderately successful, reaching #28, although subsequent albums were commercial flops.

In February 2012 Babybird released a new single entitled Can't Love You Anymore, although it failed to chart. The band were also responsible for the theme tune to Gordon Ramsay's TV show The F Word - the song had the same title and was released as a single before the TV series started, reaching #35, which was also the band's last Top 40 hit.

"CANDY GIRL" (1997)

This follow-up single (also on the Echo Records label) was also quite successful, reaching #14 in the British singles chart. It's a decent enough tune, but lacks a decent chorus. Quite like the single sleeve, though.
