BOYS TOWN GANG "Can't Take My Eyes Off You"

By Mark Nobes

Boys Town Gang were a Hi-NRG/Disco band from San Francisco, who became a one hit wonder in the UK with their cover of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", which features Jackson Moore on vocals.
The single entered the UK singles chart at No.66 on 25 July 1982, reaching No.4 for one week on August 22. During this week, Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" was at No.2 and "Come On Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners at No.1
Boys Town Gang were formed in 1980 by DJ Bill Motley, who took on a local cabaret singer Cynthia Manley. For their first two singles and the album Cruisin' The Streets. Backing vocals were provided by Don Wood, Robin Charin, Tom Morley, Phill Manganello and Keith Stewart.

Manley left in 1981, with Jackson Moore taking her place with two male backing vocalists Tom Morley and Bruce Carlton for their second album Disc Charge. I have no info as to whether they were also the backing dancers in the video above. Talking of which, they look like Village People rejects and the dance routine looks comical. As someone pointed out on Youtube, it looks like Oprah Winfrey meets the Blue Oyster Bar! Nonetheless, it's great fun and Jackson's vocal performance is excellent.
The group was actually set up to cater for the San Francisco gay clubs. They released a third and final album entitled A Cast of Thousands in 1984.
Frankie Valli's original version reached No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. during 1967, although it wasn't a hit in the UK. The track was penned by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio.
The Boy's Town Gang cover featured in the 2012 video game Just Dance 4.
