"Find The Time" by Five Star

by Mark Nobes, chief editor

"Find The Time" was Five Star's third consecutive top 10 hit here in the UK, and was released while the group were at the peak of their musical career. The track was released as the second single from their second and most successful album Silk & Steel.
The song was produced by Richard James Burgess, who was the lead singer for the synthpop band Einstein, and he composed their hit single "Einstein a Go-Go".
The songwriters were Nick Trevisick and Paul Gurvitz, and they also penned Five Star's 1985 single "R.S.V.P." which failed to break into the UK top 40, stalling at #45. I guess, asking them to pen a hit song on the back of a failure was a bit of a gamble, but it's one that paid off!

The Video

In the video, were see the group performing their slick dance routines near Tower Bridge, The Houses of Parliament and the China town area of London. Their are also fake projections of the band on various buildings created using 80s video effects, which actually look pretty convincing.

Chart Performance

"Find The Time" entered the UK singles chart at No.25 on 20th July 1986, making it the second highest new entry that week - "Some Candy Talking" by The Jesus and Mary Chain was the highest new entry at No.20. The single broke into the top 10 the following week (at No.10)  before reaching a peak position of No.7 for one week on 3rd August. The single slipped back to No.9 the following week and spent a total of 10 weeks inside the UK Top 100.
The band's lead single from Silk & Steel "Can't Wait Another Minute" had also reached No.7. Two further single were released from the album. "Rain or Shine" reached No.2 and "If I Say Yes" reached No.15. "Find The Time" was also a big hit in Ireland, reaching No.4 on the Irish Singles Chart.

Lyrics

The lyrics are a message to a lover who is dating someone else. She is convinced that her lover would rather be with her, as in the line "Oh, you know, it's me that you really need, so find the time".
"I'm telling everybody that you're still my man, I can hear them laugh behind my back" shows that the person is desperately pining for him, but may also be deluded!
