Pebbles "Girlfriend"

"Girlfriend" was the debut single by the American singer Pebbles, and the lead single from her self-titled debut album. The song became a one hit wonder in the UK, with the follow-up single "Mercedes Boy" narrowly missing out on a Top 40 spot, stalling at #42.
However, in the U.S., both of these singles reached the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Whenever I hear the song, I always expect to hear Madonna start singing "Papa Don't Preach", and the music sounds very similar don't you think? However, her song was produced by a totally different producer, Stephen Bray.
"Girlfriend" was penned and produced by L.A. (Antonio) Reid and Baby Face (Kenneth Edwards). The song was actually created for Vanessa Williams, but Pebbles offered Reid a bigger sum of money and two cars to record it for her instead. Indeed, Reid and Edwards stopped working on Williams album completely, which led to Reid, unsurprisingly, falling out with Williams.
"Girlfriend" entered the UK singles chart at #54 on 13th March 1988, reaching a peak position of No.8 for one week on 17th April.
The video is a little disappointing in that it has no storyline and mainly revolves around close-ups of Pebbles' face, with a few brief choreographed scenes. It's certainly not one of the more memorable videos of the 1980s.
Pebbles wanted a memorable name to launch her 80s pop career, so she decided to adopt the name of Fred and Wilma Flintstone's daughter. She had an affair with L.A. Reid during the 1980s, which led  to her divorcing George L. Smith. She married Reid in 1989, which was her third marriage at the time. They divorced in 1996, but Pebbles has married twice since then, and she is currently married to Excel Sharieff.
