SIMPLE MINDS

"KING IS WHITE AND IN THE CROWD"

by Mark Nobes, chief editor

This has to be the best live performance of this track that I've heard, and the band are really playing their hearts out! Very little info came with this video, but I gather that the location of this performance was somewhere in the U.S. in 1984 - New Jersey, perhaps? If anyone knows then please let us all know in the comments box below.
Simple Minds - New Gold Dream

INSTRUMENTAL MIX

This is a cracking instrumental mix of the Simple Minds track that features on the Scottish band's fifth (and best in my opinion!) studio album New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84). The album received a warm reception by the critics and was the band's first to reach Platinum sales.

Indeed, this was the start of a run of highly successful albums for Simple Minds with the following four studio albums all reaching 2x Platinum sales or better. New Gold Dream reached #3 in the UK album charts and #69 in the US, and three tracks were released as singles; Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize and Someone, Somewhere in Summertime

King Is White And In The Crowd was the ninth and last song on the album, but it was, sadly,  never released as a single. Interestingly, although Mel Gaynor played drums on this track, at the time he wasn't a full-time drummer for the band and three different drummers feature on the New Gold Dream album, the other two being Mike Ogletree and Kenny Hyslop.

I'm a big fan of instrumental mixes, and in this one you can really hear all of the guitar and synth work really shine through. There are some delicious synth pads and effects, and as Simple Minds themselves never released a full instrumental this makes the mix even more of a pleasure to listen to.
