THE SMITHS "WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?"

by Mark Nobes, chief editor

"What Difference Does It Make?" was the third single release by The Smiths and was the only single to be released from the band's self-titled studio album. Released in January 1984, The song reached #12 in the UK singles chart and, previously, "This Charming Man" had reached #8.

The single cover features actor Terence Stamp in a scene from the movie The Collector. However, the actor decided to deny permission for the use of the photo and another cover was shot featuring Morrissey doing a re-enactment of the scene. However, Terence Stamp changed his mind again (they're a funny lot these actors) and the cover featuring Morrissey is very rare and collectible.

Penned by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, the song did not include a music video as Morrissey, at the time, believed that the market would soon die - how wrong he was! The B-side features the track "Back To The Old House", with the 12" vinyl also including "These Things Take Time".
"What Difference Does It Make?" was produced by John Porter and recorded at Pluto Studios in Manchester.
