Fashion goes in cycles, and this year, the biggest fashion trends from the 80s are making a comeback in a major way. Earlier this month, the boys of BTS showcased retro looks from the decade of excess in their music video for their new single, “Dynamite.” Not only did they incorporate classic Michael Jackson moves in the video, but they also wore quintessential 80s trends such as double denim ensembles
Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus also dropped a new music video for her song, “Midnight Sky,” which features a fashion feast of 80s outfits that are inspired by Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry and Joan Jett. You may not be a pop star or a celebrity, but you can definitely incorporate a little bit of the 80s into your everyday look without coming across as being too costume-y. Some of the most popular retro looks right now are surprisingly easy to wear, and you can make them work for your lifestyle and taste. Here are some of the best 80s fashion trends that are making a comeback, and how you can wear them.

Slim Cut Joggers

Athleisure has been around since the Juicy Couture trend exploded in the early 2000s, but this year, joggers, an essential part of 80s fitness fashion, have become a favourite among streetwear fans. Back then, the jogger was paired with a matching jacket, and the set was referred to as a tracksuit. Though this outfit was strictly worn for jogging, walking or running, the jogger has now evolved, and has become a fashion staple for celebrities such as Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid.
To create a more put together look, wear your joggers with a knitted sweater in a matching colour and accessorise with some jewellery. You can also wear your joggers as if you’re wearing denim jeans. Pair them with a slim fit t-shirt, a crop top, or a chequered button down over a plain shirt; then finish off the look with classic trainers, heeled mules or chunky boots.

High Waisted Jeans

High waisted jeans, or “mum jeans” are back in style again. Though some people may think that this 80s staple may not work for them, this type of jean cut actually flatters a lot of body types,  and it can eliminate the dreaded muffin top that’s a result of wearing overly low cut jeans. Pair yours with a soft blouse, and make sure to tuck the blouse in, then wear heels to elongate your legs. You can also wear a crop top with them, or channel 80s Madonna, and pair it with a bra top.

Bermuda Shorts

Take a fashion cue from Ferris Bueller’s girlfriend, Sloane, and wear a pair of Bermuda shorts. This 80s comfy casual wear staple has been spotted on the Spring and Summer 2020 runways, and you can modernise it by pairing it with a tailored top. Pick a slim-cut pair, and wear them with a soft, thin-knit sweater, a blouse, or a blazer in the same colour. Wear them with pumps or strappy heels for additional style points.

Like a record, fashion really does go right round. Incorporate a little of the 80s in your everyday wear by donning these fashion trends, and don’t be afraid to experiment with accessories and styling to get your best look.
